the former Spanish possessions in the Western Hemisphere, at one time including South America (except Brazil), Central America, Mexico, the West Indies, Florida, and most of the land in the U.S. west of the Mississippi River.

a former Spanish viceroyalty established in Central and North America in 1535 that was centered around present-day Mexico City. It was comprised of all the land under Spanish control north of the Isthmus of Panama and included parts of the southern U.S. It also came to include the Spanish possessions in the Caribbean and the Philippines. The viceroyalty was abolished in 1821, when Mexico achieved independence
